Municipal Animal Census

Each year, the Rockaway Township Division of Health, through its Animal Control program, conducts a municipal census to assess the dog and cat population. In conducting the animal census, Township representatives visit properties throughout Rockaway to determine whether there is evidence of a pet that has not been licensed. Learning of potentially unlicensed dogs and cats helps the Township assure, foremost, that all of our pets are vaccinated and protected against rabies. This is particularly valuable in an area like ours, where an indoor/outdoor pet or dog at large may potentially encounter a rabid wild animal. Protection is not only necessary, but is also the law, and mandatory State and municipal licensing policies assure compliance with relevant rabies inoculation regulations.


Rockaway Township licenses approximately 4,200 cats and dogs each year, and there are understandably occasional errors during performance of the animal census.
