Located a few doors down from Applebee’s and Shop-Rite of Rockaway at 405 Route 46
As the name suggests, Tony and Vinnie’s Italian Bakery and Deli looks and smells like a typical New Jersey bakery.
But there’s an unlikely origin to the popular Rockaway Bakery & Deli — it’s owned and operated by Ecuadorians.
The bakery has been a huge family effort. The Calle family includes
• Owners Alonso and his wife Olimpia
• Daughter Jenifer,
• Sons Bryan and Ernie,
• Cousin Jahn,
• Aunt Irma and Uncle Juan
Alonso and his wife Olimpia immigrated from Ecuador to the United States in 1994, and he immediately started working as a baker at Tony and Vinnie’s. He biked 10 miles to and from work each day. Then in 2012, he was able to buy the business and start his own journey.
The bakery has continued to thrive by offering fresh and delicious baked goods — mostly Italian, but with a few touches of home.
