Health - Nursing, Clinics & Screenings

7
  • Rockaway Township provides a regular Child Health Conference, which includes a vaccination program and exams by a licensed physician. Eligibility requirements include the following: Participants must be between the ages of two months and 18 years, participants must be eligible for the federally funded Vaccines for Children program, participants must have no health insurance, or health insurance that does not cover immunizations. For more information on child health services, please call the Division of Health at 973-983-2848.
Health - Nursing, Clinics & Screenings
  • Yes. Scientific studies have shown that even a newborn baby’s immune system can safely handle several immunizations at one time. Combination vaccines, which have been used for decades and may offer several scheduled vaccinations in one shot, may protect your child from a number of different diseases.
Health - Nursing, Clinics & Screenings
  • In New Jersey, there are stringent laws that require laboratories and physicians to report a number of infectious diseases to the local health authority. Health officials, in turn, must investigate each reportable disease and may contact a sick or previously sick individual to complete State-mandated reporting requirements. These investigations are always done by the health authority responsible for the geographic area where a sick individual resides. Such investigations are performed to comply with State law, but also are done to ensure that proper control measures may be put in place, outbreaks may be averted, and disease trends may be monitored. Local public health nurses, health officers and environmental health specialists may become involved in this mandatory reporting, and are always grateful when residents cooperate with these requirements, as outlined in State Statute.
Health - Nursing, Clinics & Screenings
  • Per New Jersey law, a child must receive a number of immunizations to attend child care or school. The Division of Health’s public health nurse audits the records of each child care center and school located in Rockaway Township. If a child is found to be deficient in meeting these State requirements, the child’s parents are given 2 weeks to obtain the vaccine. If the child is not immunized within 2 weeks, laws state that the child is to be excluded from school. The State established these vaccine requirements both to protect the unvaccinated child from contracting a communicable disease, and to protect other children with religious or medical vaccine exemptions from receiving a potentially serious disease. New Jersey does permit legitimate medical and religious exemptions to these vaccination requirements, so some children may be vulnerable to serious infectious diseases.
Health - Nursing, Clinics & Screenings
  • The Division of Health provides influenza and pneumonia immunizations to residents during the fall and early winter months. Some age and medical restrictions apply, so please be sure to call the Division of Health at 973-983-2848 with any questions or for more information.

Animal Control

5
  • State law requires that any pet with a rabies vaccination expiring before November 1 of the licensing year will require an updated vaccine prior to the issuance of a new license. Every municipality in New Jersey must abide by this statutory requirement, and it assures that your pet will be protected from rabies for the majority of the year. The Rockaway Township Division of Health offers a free rabies clinic at the Public Works Garage, 540 Green Pond Road, twice per year. Please contact the Division of Health for dates.

    Animal Control
  • It is generally okay and of no risk to your pet if an early vaccination is obtained, but please be sure to ask your veterinarian if this will be okay. Please remember that the Township offers 2 free rabies clinics each year.

    Animal Control
  • Residents who observe a sick or injured animal, regardless of species, should call Rockaway Township’s Animal Control Officer or the Rockaway Township Police Department. Animal Control may be reached at 973-983-2849 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. At all other times, please contact the Rockaway Township Police Department at 973-625-4000. For your safety, please remember to never handle a sick or injured animal - always contact Animal Control or the Police Department!
    Animal Control
  • In accordance with regulations, a dog / cat of licensing age refers to any dog or cat that has attained the age of 7 months, or that possesses a permanent set of teeth. You may get more information on licensing your pet by calling the Division of Health at 973-983-2848 or by checking the Township website. 5
  • No. Food prepared at a kitchen in a private home may not be sold to the public. Food product sold to the public must come from a licensed retail food establishment that is inspected by the local health authority or, in the case of wholesale / distributed foods, by the State Health Department.
    Health – Environmental
  • Yes. A temporary retail food license is necessary for any event where food is sold or otherwise made available to the public. An application must be obtained from the Division of Health, completed and remitted with the appropriate fee. This license, once approved, will be usable for a period of up to 3 days. A temporary food event application may be printed directly from the town’s website.
    Health – Environmental
  • To serve food to the public in Rockaway Township, you must first complete an application to operate a retail food establishment, and the application must be accompanied by professionally prepared plans. The plans must include the proposed layout, and all mechanical components, materials and finishes to be provided. Applicants must also provide all equipment specifications, the name of the exterminator that will be providing monthly service, plus evidence any State-mandated food handler / manager training that is required, depending on the type of food establishment. Applicants also must advise the Division of Health of the restaurant’s water source (i.e., private well / public) and the type of sewage disposal system that will be used, in the event a septic design must be submitted and reviewed along with the application. Per N.J.A.C. 8:24, the State’s retail food code, the Division of Health then has 30 days to review the application. If the application and accompanying plans are in compliance with code and if any other necessary approvals are obtained from other Township departments (i.e., Planning, Zoning, Construction), approval will be granted by the Division of Health. Approximately 2 weeks prior to opening, the Division of Health must be contacted to schedule a preopening inspection.
    Health – Environmental
  • To help assure that your septic system doesn’t malfunction and require expensive repair or alteration, be very careful what goes into it. Don’t pour cooking oils, fats, greases, toxic substances or non-biodegradable items down drains, sinks or toilets. Avoid using multiple water sources at once, such as the shower, laundry and/or dishwasher. Don’t drive vehicles over the septic disposal field, and don’t construct or install accessory structures that may encroach upon the septic system. Perhaps most importantly, please remember to pump your septic tank regularly. For a family of four, it is recommended that you have a professional septic pumping company service your septic tank a minimum of once every 3 years.
    Health – Environmental
  • Safe potable drinking water is extremely important, and many of Rockaway Township’s residents derive their drinking water from private wells located on their property. It is ultimately the responsibility of homeowners to contact a certified laboratory if they wish to have private well water tested. The Division of Health will be happy to help interpret your water quality results, and can provide information if any results exceed standards. Please contact the Division of Health Office at 973-983-2848 if you have questions about your private well.
